Timberlake Place Apartments

Client: Jefferson Area Board for Aging

Location: Charlottesville, VA

Timberlake Place Apartments is located in the historic Woolen Mills District of Charlottesville, VA. The property is located within close proximity to the downtown area, services, public transportation and the site is within an established mixed-income community. The apartment complex provides energy efficient homes for people over the age of 55.  The 26 apartments incorporate universal design components and energy efficiency measures. The project is a combination of historic rehabilitation and new construction, meeting Charlottesville Architectural Design Control District guidelines, and is designed to complement the surrounding neighborhood. A rare infill development within an established mixed-income and mixed-use community, Timberlake represents a departure from the trend towards large and isolated senior housing projects. Rezoning for the site was accomplished through a partnership with the Woolen Mills Neighborhood Association. The project leaves undisturbed close to one-half acre of existing woodlands, as well as an additional large open space that will be dedicated to a community garden for the residents and neighbors. According to Mike Hawkins, VHDA Managing Director of Community Outreach, “This development is the latest example of the strong partnership between non-profit housing organizations, the community, and the city of Charlottesville in addressing local affordable housing opportunities.”
