Heron’s Landing is one of Virginia Supportive Housing’s (VSH) most energy efficient projects with a final HERS index of 57 which equates to about 40% more energy efficient than a standard newly built apartment today. The EarthCraft Multifamily development, designed by Community Design Studio and constructed by Breeden Construction, provides 60 new homes to previously homeless individuals in the area, offering them not only shelter but essential support services in house. VSH incorporated solar into the development for both a photovoltaic solar electric system and for solar thermal water heater to reduce the overall energy consumption. All units are equipped with Energy Star lighting, appliances and triple pane windows. Heating and cooling is provided through ductless mini-split systems. The site was previously an under-utilized vacant lot known for waste dumping; now it is beautiful site benefiting the residents, staff and local community.
