Director of Communications and Outreach

Overview

Viridiant is a growing, non-profit environmental organization that works to advance sustainable, affordable, and energy efficient construction. The Director of Communications and Outreachis responsible for developing and executing marketing and communication strategies, managing the organization’s events, fund development, and the coordination of sponsorships. This supervisory position works closely with the Executive Director, the Board and the Operations and Outreach Manager (direct report). The role reports to the Executive Director who reports to the Board of Directors and requires various skillsets providing an exciting opportunity to grow the reach of the organization!

For over ten years, the organization has been contributing to the community with a budget of approximately $1.4M and a fulltime staff of 11, as well as 15 independent field contractors. Summary of Primary Job Responsibilities and Duties

Communications

  • With external support, develop and implement communications plans with cost-effective marketing and outreach strategies to communicate with a range of constituents through printed and electronic media and advertising
  • Create, write, edit and produce press releases, publications, videos, collateral, newsletters, social media content, and other printed materials, including annual reports
  • Update and maintain organization’s website, online publications, and social media
  • Communicate and collaborate with a range of people and organizations to advance Viridiant’s mission
  • Provide marketing support to builders and developers

Outreach

  • Development
    • Develop and implement cost-effective fund development program involving individuals, corporate sponsors, and foundations
    • Direct the production of annual fundraising events and campaigns
    • Utilize Salesforce to plan, implement, and evaluate specific fund development programs and campaigns
    • Manage builder/developer outreach to promote the organization’s programs and services
    • Manage corporate sponsorships and benefits
  • Events
    • Manage the production and execution of all organization events (timelines, content, budget, logistics, sponsors)
    • Building Sustainability Conference/Awards (annual, Spring)
    • Earth Day 5K Race Without a Trace (annual, Spring)
    • Party for the Planet Festival (annual, Spring)
    • Building Sustainability Tour (annual, Spring)
    • Fundraising/Cultivation Events (as scheduled)
    • Technical Advisor Meetings (annual, first of the year)
    • Socials (as scheduled)
    • Trainings (recurring, 3-4x/year)
    • Community Event Booths/Dedications (as scheduled)

Performs additional responsibilities related to the success of the organization

Key Qualifications, Skills and Abilities

  • Bachelor’s degree in in marketing or business highly preferred
  • Minimum 2-3 yearsmarketing, events and/or fundraising experience; Any combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the work successfully
  • Demonstrates excellent organizational and managerial skills with attention to detail
  • Excellent and prompt written and verbal communications skills
  • Effective in managing timelines and project budgets
  • Capacity to manage multiple projects simultaneously and successfully
  • Energetic and personable; takes initiative and thinks creatively
  • Strong computer skills In Word, Excel, WordPress, Photoshop and design/ layout software, and Salesforce database; marketing software (Adobe) or related area
  • Experience with website and newsletter production and message development
  • Nonprofit and supervisory experience a plus
  • Some local travel to other locations for meetings or for other business-related needs
  • Monday through Friday 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM generally, with some flexible options
  • Promotes and adheres to organization’s mission, vision and values; policies and applicable laws in a fair and equitable manner

Technical Advisor

Overview

Viridiant is a growing, non-profit environmental organization that works to advance sustainable, affordable, and energy efficient construction. The Technical Advisor provides hands-on technical assistance to participating builders and developers during design and in the field throughout construction. This role is part of a cross functional, collaborative construction project team. Projects range from 6 months to 24 months with a majority located in Virginia. This non-supervisory position has the potential to grow with continuing education/certification and successful work performance. The Technical Advisor reports to the Technical Manager who reports to the Executive Director.

Summary of Primary Job Responsibilities and Duties

  • Performs field construction inspections.
  • Analyzes and verifies Viridiant worksheet items, performing diagnostic testing when required.
  • Provides construction technical assistance and guidance to Viridiant builders.
  • Performs blower door and duct blaster testing functions.
  • Completes administrative tasks including data entry and scheduling.
  • Performs additional responsibilities related to the success of the organization.

Key Qualifications, Skills and Abilities

  • High School diploma, some college preferred.
  • Minimum 2 – 3 years in the construction industry; Any combination of education and experience that demonstrates the knowledge and ability to perform the work.
  • RESNET (national) certification plus architectural and energy modeling & analysis (software) experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of residential energy-efficient construction and green building practices, including diagnostic testing preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Enthusiastic about educating builders on Viridiant’s services and encouraging builder participation in programs.
  • A sense of urgency is a must.
  • Skilled with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook, as well as experience with CRM software (e.g., Salesforce.com) or related area; able to readily learn new software programs; uses company laptop/iPad.
  • At construction / renovation work site approximately 80% of time; locations are predominantly in Virginia; access to company vehicle for travel to / from project sites with minimal overnight travel.
  • Primarily at construction / renovation work site so the physical demands include, but not limited to standing, walking, sitting, using hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls. Nominal time in an office work environment.
  • Valid Virginia driver’s license; DMV record in good standing.
  • Typical days and hours of work are Monday through Friday 8:30 am to 5 pm; Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties and business demand; minimal overtime.
